Small Steps
Your small steps of obedience will always seem a lot smaller than the world’s problems.
Proverbs 3:5-6 is our focus passage. I recommend people memorize this passage literally forwards and backwards. It is a great help in facing problems that are way too big for us.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)
Ask yourself the questions:
Do I want straight paths or crooked paths?
Who makes my path straight, me or the Lord?
Consider Proverbs 3:5-6 in reverse:
The Lord makes my paths straight.
I will acknowledge Him in all my ways.
I will NOT lean on my own finite understanding.
Instead, I will trust the Lord with all my heart.
Your small steps of obedience will always seem a lot smaller than the world’s problems.
God isn’t calling you to solve the massive problems plaguing the world. He is calling you to faithful obedience in the small and seemingly inconsequential moments of day to day life. God is responsible for the transformative results of our minuscule steps of obedience.
Perhaps a small step each day for you is to pray for that obstinate friend who seems to hate the things of God. Only God can change that friend. Your job is to pray and point them to the truth.
Perhaps you have been far from God in this season of life. A small step of repentance and faith brings the presence of God rushing back into your life... Open His word and feed upon it. Only God can renew your heart and mind, bringing you peace.
Perhaps you have been reluctant to speak boldly the truth of God to others. Only God can enable those around you to hear, understand, and receive that truth. Your job is to tell it - you are the messenger.
Remember to be faithful in the moment, God will be faithful to work out His overarching redemptive plan that you inhabit!
David Powlison wrote, “Knowing this will bring peace and sanity back into your life.”
Our faithfulness in small things are transformed in to big things in the hands of a mighty God. Expect great things as you Trust Him with all your heart!
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” - Isaiah 12:2
